The green band is the even-money range and the one to plan on: half of outcomes land inside it. The pale band behind it bounds eight in ten ($18,566 to $34,401). The path is this model's own: it starts along the momentum of its recorded history and bends toward its projected median as the horizon lengthens, so no two cars share a future curve.

The verdict

Strong within its price band. Scores 56/100, ranking 2 of 46 in the under $30k band. Risk resilience is the strongest input, ownership economics the weakest.
Running it costs about $3,410 a year (17.5% of value), which is what the economics score measures. All in, including the projected value change, it is $2,420 a year.
The model's five year median is $25,929, a +33.0% move, with the tenth percentile at $18,566.

Scored against every recent Australian sale this library holds, half its values land within 11.2 per cent of the price paid and the rest miss by more, in either direction. Projections are therefore damped toward flat in proportion to how little is known, and the plausible band is never narrower than the error the model is known to make.

2 completed Australian sales of 2 rows. Rows marked asking, no sale, or context are shown for honesty but do not count toward the evidence grade: an ask is not a transaction, a pass-in is a refusal, and a provenance or overseas result does not price the ordinary local car. The badge on every row is computed by the same rule as the grade, so the two cannot drift apart.

No forecast is used to compute the hurdle. It is the purchase, the duty, any premium and 5 years of running cost, grossed up for the cost of selling and spread back over the hold. The projection it is measured against is the weakest number in this product and is drawn that way in the chart above. Transport, finance and any restoration spend sit outside it.

The case for and against

The case for

Never officially sold in Australia, so every example is a grey import, giving it genuine scarcity within the Type R family. Values have doubled since 2016 and the K20A engine is cheap and reliable to maintain.

The case against

The niche import status means a thin market at 42 days on market and buyers need to check import compliance carefully. It lacks the outright poise of the DC2 it followed, which some enthusiasts still prefer. The international record shows genuine Type Rs selling anywhere between GBP910 and GBP15,750, so condition decides far more than the model does, and there is no Australian auction result at all to anchor the value here.

Two Australian results and they price the odometer, but only just

$23,500 at 87,550 kilometres in Haberfield, New South Wales, November 2023, and $19,000 at 168,527 kilometres at Picnic Point, March 2026. Eighty-one thousand kilometres apart and nineteen per cent apart in price, which is 2.9 per cent per 10,000 kilometres at the distance this record expects. It carried 2.4 and now carries the measured figure.

Two points make a line and nothing else, and these two cars differ in more than distance

The dearer, lower-kilometre car is standard throughout - which is what the market pays for on a Type R - but its service history is lost and its front bumper is damaged. The cheaper, higher-kilometre car has coilovers fitted, which a Type R buyer discounts, but it also has a major service in January 2026, a ceramic coating, a clean roadworthy in March 2026 and three dated dealer stamps. Those pull the gap in opposite directions, so the slope above is arithmetic rather than measurement and the third car will move it.

The market is also twenty-eight months apart

On two results, and this model was rising over that window, which means the true distance penalty is likely to be steeper than the raw pair reads. SOURCING: both are now read from the Collecting Cars lot pages themselves rather than from an aggregator summary, which is where the condition and service detail above comes from. Replace them with a published house figure when one appears.

No other Australian result

The EP3 does not otherwise appear in the Australian auction record, and it is thin internationally too - twenty-four lots, most of them not Type Rs at all. The genuine international Type R results run from GBP910 to GBP15,750, so condition decides far more than the model does, and no foreign figure sets the Australian one.

The coefficient moves 2.9 to 1.5

The paragraph above already names the problem with 2.9: two points, 28 months apart, in a market that was rising over the window, which is distance and date confounded rather than distance measured. At this record's expected distance 2.9 converts to an elasticity of -0.464, more than twice the Japanese performance segment's fitted -0.189, and the model now runs a curve where that extrapolates rather than stopping at a cap. Two observations earn one fifth weight on their own slope and the rest comes from the segment.
