The track record grades a handful of calls. This scores the model against every recent sale in the index: take the carried value, apply the one adjustment the row supports (the odometer written into the note) and compare it to what the car made. Half the sales land within 11.2%.
Those figures are in-sample. The carried value was built by reading these sales, so scoring it against them flatters it. Held out properly, with every sale predicted from the car’s other sales only and indexed for the year it happened, the median error over 426 sales across 83 models is 12.2 per cent, with 41 per cent inside ten and a ninetieth percentile of 35 per cent. A call on a car that has not sold yet should be judged against that number, and it is the wider of the two.
It is also where the band widths come from. Held-out error is roughly flat in the number of comparables a value rests on. The typical call does not get much better with more evidence, but the tail does not behave: at a single recorded local sale the ninetieth percentile of error is 57 per cent, against 32 at seven or more. Thin evidence does not make the ordinary call worse. It makes the disaster likely. A call is now banded on that basis rather than on a habitual ten per cent.
What this is not
It is not a forecast test. These values were fitted with these sales already in them, so this measures how tightly one number describes a set it has seen, which is a weaker claim than predicting one it has not. The forecast test is the call log, it is kept separate, and it is much smaller.
Sales before 2025 are excluded. A car that sold in 2018 sold into a different market, and scoring today’s value against it measures five years of appreciation rather than the model. Those rows run about sixty per cent high for that reason alone, and including them would flatter nothing and mislead everyone.
What the remaining 11.2% is
Colour, options, condition, documentation, and whether the seller photographed any of it. None of that is in a value and none of it is in an odometer. It is the difference between two cars of the same model on the same day, and on this evidence it is worth about $6,086 on a $54,444 car.
That is the honest case for reading an advertisement properly, and it is why the free number and the paid document are different products rather than the same one at two prices.
Every row is a completed sale at a published figure. Sourcing is stated per model, not per row. Some records are confirmed against the auction house; some were surfaced by an aggregator and are marked as the weakest grade this library uses. The model page says which.
A hammer is a maximum, not an average. The winning bid is the highest estimate in the room rather than the room’s consensus, so a fitted value built from hammers describes the top of what a buyer would pay rather than the middle of it. That is consistent - every prediction on this site is a prediction of a hammer - but it is worth knowing before quoting one of these figures as what a car is “worth”.
88 of the 244 models in this library have no counted sale at all. Those pages say so and are refused for paid work. The gap is the honest state of public transaction data in this country, not an oversight.
