Projected value in five years
The case for and against
A genuine WRC homologation model with only around 320 estimated Australian imports, giving it real scarcity within the JDM turbo coupe segment. Values are up about 40 per cent since 2016 on collector demand for Group A rally heritage, though a third off the 2022 peak.
The AWD driveline and turbo system cost more to maintain than a two-wheel-drive equivalent, and specialist parts are increasingly sourced from Japan. At 62 days on market it is one of the slowest sellers in this comparison set. The two Australian sales are both of the Group A Rallye homologation car rather than a standard GT-Four, so a non-homologation car should sit below this figure, and the more recent of the two sales was the lower.

Similar cars, and what they cost to run
Across the six the slope is 0.08 per cent per 10,000 kilometres with a correlation of minus 0.06. Not weak: absent. The set spans 79,997 to 295,039 kilometres and $22,000 to $31,380, and the two extremes are the wrong way round - the lowest-distance car made the least money and the highest-distance car made more than it. kmPct stays at a nominal 0.3 and no thesis written off this record should lean on the reading.

The top of the set, $31,380 at Sydney in March 2023, is 88,126 kilometres FROM NEW certified with full Japanese documentation, highly original, with the owner's manual, service booklet, dealer directory and invoices, and the house verified it. The bottom of the set, $22,000 at Sandringham in July 2024, is 79,997 kilometres INDICATED and not warranted, on a car given a full doors-closed respray three months before it was sold. Eight thousand kilometres apart and forty-three per cent apart in price. The gap is paperwork.
$27,100 at Lewisham in November 2024 is number 70 of the 77 Group A Rallyes allocated to Australia, with the numbered plaque and the factory leather - and it made mid-pack money because it has 295,039 kilometres. So distance is not free; it is simply outranked by everything else, and on the one car where rarity and distance pull against each other, they cancel.
The six-car fit at the 130,000 kilometres this record treats as standard returns $27,670, the median is $27,925 and the mean $27,663. The old figure sat above all three.
An ST185 RC at $26,502 and a 1991 ST185 Group A Rallye at $35,050, both the earlier homologation car rather than the ST205 this record describes.
This record prices the plaque as an option worth 8 per cent. The three Australian Group A Rallye results do not agree with each other or with that figure: $45,150 at Shannons in August 2020 and $41,500 at Shannons in February 2022, both with no published odometer, sit 48 to 61 per cent above the standard car - while $27,100 at Lewisham in November 2024 sits marginally BELOW it, on 295,039 kilometres. One says nothing, two say half as much again, and the two are from a different auction house in the 2020-22 window when Japanese performance cars peaked everywhere.
Rather than moved to fit two results from one house at the top of a cycle. What the record needs is a numbered car with a published odometer selling in the current market, and until one does the premium is an open question stated as one - the same treatment the MX-5 SP and the STI S207 get.
One of those two rows described a 1994 Group A Rallye as the ST185 homologation car. It is an ST205. The ST185 RC is the earlier car and is the separate context row above. SOURCING: five of the six ST205 results are now read from the Collecting Cars lot pages themselves rather than an aggregator summary, which is where the documentation and modification detail above comes from. The two Shannons figures are house results with no odometer attached.
The report prices the car in the advertisement.
