The green band is the even-money range and the one to plan on: half of outcomes land inside it. The pale band behind it bounds eight in ten ($18,849 to $28,981). The path is this model's own: it starts along the momentum of its recorded history and bends toward its projected median as the horizon lengthens, so no two cars share a future curve.

The verdict

A defensible case with reservations. Scores 56/100, ranking 29 of 94 in the $30k to $100k band. Demand durability is the strongest input, scarcity the weakest.
Running it costs about $3,800 a year (11.5% of value), which is what the economics score measures. All in, including the projected value change, it is $5,980 a year.
The model's five year median is $24,219, a -26.6% move, with the tenth percentile at $18,849.

4 completed Australian sales of 4 rows. Rows marked asking, no sale, or context are shown for honesty but do not count toward the evidence grade: an ask is not a transaction, a pass-in is a refusal, and a provenance or overseas result does not price the ordinary local car. The badge on every row is computed by the same rule as the grade, so the two cannot drift apart.

No forecast is used to compute the hurdle. It is the purchase, the duty, any premium and 5 years of running cost, grossed up for the cost of selling and spread back over the hold. The projection it is measured against is the weakest number in this product and is drawn that way in the chart above. Transport, finance and any restoration spend sit outside it.

The case for and against

The case for

A genuinely Australian-built fast Ford with a fixed, known production run, riding a model family whose Mk1 flagship just doubled its auction record. Good two-doors are already hard to find.

The case against

No published Australian Mk2 transaction anchors the figure, and the spectacular results that make headlines belong to the Mk1 - a different and far dearer car that flatters this one by association.

Four Australian results and they do not support anything near the figure this record carried

$37,000 at 29,641km in January 2026, $36,780 at 49,923km in August 2026, $30,000 at 84,642km in December 2023 and $28,500 at 70,731km in August 2022. All four are 1980 Mk2 cars, all four sold in Victoria, and the highest of them is $37,000. This record carried $62,000, which is 68 per cent above the best result and roughly double the four-sale average of $33,070. The value moves to $33,000.

The expected distance was also wrong

This record assumed 120,000 kilometres. Every car in the sample sits between 29,641 and 84,642, so the assumption was extrapolating past the entire observed population; it is now 70,000, which is the middle of what actually trades.

The distance penalty is deliberately left at 0.5 despite a steeper fit

The four results correlate at minus 0.875 and imply 4.9 per cent per 10,000 kilometres, but that is a modern-car slope being read off a forty-six-year-old classic where readings are frequently unverifiable and restoration history matters far more than distance. Fitting it would produce arithmetic, not a valuation.

Rally preparation did not hurt

The 29,641-kilometre car is described as rally prepped and it is the highest result in the set. SOURCING: aggregator-surfaced auction results, not confirmed against the auction house, the weakest evidence grade in this library.

The Australian RS2000 is its own car

Built at Homebush from 1979 in two and four-door bodies - about 880 four-doors and the balance two-doors - with the 70kW two-litre, short-shift four-speed and Scheel seats, at $6,814 new. Shannons has offered them repeatedly across 2021-22 lots, so the car trades publicly, but the results sheets list the model without prices surfacing in the searchable record.

The record price is a different car

A 1974 Mk1 RS2000 made A$206,000 at Australian auction in late 2023, more than double the previous benchmark - and the Mk1 is a separate, far dearer market. A 1980 UK car made the equivalent of A$170,000 at Silverstone in 2017. Those results demonstrate where the model family's ceiling sits without setting the price of an Australian Mk2, which trades at a fraction of them. The value here prices a good original two-door.

The four-door shows up in the prices

The Oakleigh car is the only four-door in the sample - one of the 880 built in that body against roughly 1,570 two-doors - and it is the cheapest of the four at $28,500, despite carrying less distance than the Yellingbo two-door that made $30,000. That is one observation and not a measurement, but it points the same way as the 8 per cent this record already carries for the two-door shell, so the option stays where it is rather than being fitted to a single pair.

Originality is not visibly paid for in this sample, which is the opposite of what the model family is supposed to do

The two dearest cars are the two modified ones - a rally build with a cage and a stripped interior at $37,000, and a car converted to a Type 9 five-speed at $36,780 - while the matching-numbers car with Recaros and a Ford Australia letter made $30,000. Before reading that as a market that does not care: the two modified cars are also the two most recent and the two lowest-distance, and four results cannot separate three effects. What can be said is that neither modification was punished, which is unusual enough in this library to record.

Three of the four carry a Ford Australia authenticity letter or matching numbers,

And given that replica RS builds from base Escorts are the headline risk on this model, that documentation is doing work in every one of these results. A car without it should be assumed to sit under this sample, not inside it.
