The green band is the even-money range and the one to plan on: half of outcomes land inside it. The pale band behind it bounds eight in ten ($13,985 to $25,372). The path is this model's own: it starts along the momentum of its recorded history and bends toward its projected median as the horizon lengthens, so no two cars share a future curve.

The verdict

A defensible case with reservations. Scores 41/100, ranking 31 of 46 in the under $30k band. Demand durability is the strongest input, liquidity the weakest.
Running it costs about $4,950 a year (19.8% of value), which is what the economics score measures. All in, including the projected value change, it is $6,326 a year.
The model's five year median is $20,020, a -19.9% move, with the tenth percentile at $13,985.

Scored against every recent Australian sale this library holds, half its values land within 11.2 per cent of the price paid and the rest miss by more, in either direction. Projections are therefore damped toward flat in proportion to how little is known, and the plausible band is never narrower than the error the model is known to make.

4 completed Australian sales of 4 rows. Rows marked asking, no sale, or context are shown for honesty but do not count toward the evidence grade: an ask is not a transaction, a pass-in is a refusal, and a provenance or overseas result does not price the ordinary local car. The badge on every row is computed by the same rule as the grade, so the two cannot drift apart.

No forecast is used to compute the hurdle. It is the purchase, the duty, any premium and 5 years of running cost, grossed up for the cost of selling and spread back over the hold. The projection it is measured against is the weakest number in this product and is drawn that way in the chart above. Transport, finance and any restoration spend sit outside it.

The case for and against

The case for

A tech-laden 1990s Japanese GT with twin-turbo AWD and four-wheel steering, values are up about 40 per cent since 2016 as nostalgia for the era grows, off a 2024 high. Genuine manual examples are a small, sought-after subset of the surviving fleet.

The case against

The complex 1990s electronics, including active aero and four-wheel steering, can fail expensively as the car ages, and specialist knowledge is increasingly scarce. It remains a niche pick with a thin market at 50 days on market.

Known faults and risks

Risk 2Twin-turbo AWD driveline service costs
Risk 3Timing belt service history critical

Four Australian results, and the pair in the middle is the whole story

$30,500 at 140,018 kilometres in Blacktown, New South Wales, August 2025, against $15,150 at 141,802 kilometres in Queanbeyan, June 2023. One thousand seven hundred and eighty-four kilometres apart on the odometer and a hundred and one per cent apart in price.

What separates them is paperwork and condition

The dearer car came with a Japanese deregistration certificate that verifies the reading, Australian import approval, a Japanese export certificate, fresh compliance and a clean roadworthy. The cheaper one was sold with a disclosed exhaust leak, dead remote central locking, chips and fading paint, and a registration expiring four months later. On a thirty-year-old Japanese import the certificate is worth more than the reading it certifies, because without one the reading is a number on a dial.

The odometer still prices the car, just not much

Across the four the slope is 1.5 per cent per 10,000 kilometres with a correlation of minus 0.46. This record already carried 1.6 as an assumption and it is now a measurement.

The top and the bottom of the set both argue for documentation

Over distance. The dearest, $31,750 at Five Dock in July 2023, is a 27,062-kilometre car sold at Japanese auction as grade 4.5 and verified by the house. The highest-distance car in the set, $23,000 at 262,257 kilometres in Townsville in February 2021, still beat the Queanbeyan car by half again - with a disclosed RACQ repair to its rear quarter and a full maintenance record.

The value moves $26,000 to $25,000,

Which is the mean of the four ($25,100) and sits between the fitted figure at the expected distance ($24,647) and the median ($26,750). SOURCING: all four are read from the Collecting Cars lot pages themselves, which is where the certificate, grade and fault detail above comes from.
