One Australian lot, not counted: an HJ Sandman van at $115,000 in August 2026, an earlier series and a hammer before premium
Measured across this library, a value with no Australian result behind it runs high about seven times in ten, by a median of ten per cent. Read this one as a ceiling rather than a midpoint.

The green band is the even-money range and the one to plan on: half of outcomes land inside it. The pale band behind it bounds eight in ten ($86,381 to $174,600). The path is this model's own: it starts along the momentum of its recorded history and bends toward its projected median as the horizon lengthens, so no two cars share a future curve.

The verdict

A defensible case with reservations. Scores 61/100, ranking 54 of 104 in the over $100k band. Scarcity is the strongest input, risk resilience the weakest.
Running it costs about $7,300 a year (7.0% of value), which is what the economics score measures. All in, including the projected value change, it is $5,190 a year.
The model's five year median is $122,551, a +16.7% move, with the tenth percentile at $86,381.
Value is research, not a measurement. Treat the level as indicative and the structure as the analysis.

Scored against every recent Australian sale this library holds, half its values land within 11.2 per cent of the price paid and the rest miss by more, in either direction. Rows marked asking, no sale, or context are shown for honesty but do not count toward the evidence grade: an ask is not a transaction, a pass-in is a refusal, and a provenance or overseas result does not price the ordinary local car. The badge on every row is computed by the same rule as the grade, so the two cannot drift apart.

No forecast is used to compute the hurdle. It is the purchase, the duty, any premium and 5 years of running cost, grossed up for the cost of selling and spread back over the hold. The projection it is measured against is the weakest number in this product and is drawn that way in the chart above. Transport, finance and any restoration spend sit outside it.

The case for and against

The case for

The most culturally recognisable Australian vehicle of its era, and one of very few in this library that appears at auction regularly enough to price. Genuine option-coded HZ Sandmans are scarce against the number of tributes, and documentation commands a very large premium.

The case against

This is a panel van with a 308 - the value is entirely cultural and could soften with the generation that grew up around it. The Sandman pack is a decal and trim option that is easy to fake, tributes outnumber genuine cars heavily, and buying without a documented option code risks paying Sandman money for a Kingswood van.

Known faults and risks

Australian auction record

A 1974 HJ Sandman van sold at Seven82Motors for $115,000 plus buyer's premium in August 2026. That is an earlier series than this entry and the figure is a hammer before premium, so it is recorded as context rather than as a direct comparable.

Why this car is in the library

The Sandman is the clearest example in Australia of cultural value outrunning mechanical value. It is a panel van with a 308 and a Monaro interior, slower than most of the sedans it shares an engine with, and it trades above many of them. Ordinary HZ vans are worth a fraction of a Sandman, and the option pack is a decal and trim package that is trivially faked - the tribute and replica market here is larger than the genuine one. Seven82Motors, whose catalogues are heavy with tributes, listed a Sandman alongside several openly badged replicas in the same sale. Documentation matters more on this car than on anything else in this library.

What we will not sell you
We will not price a Holden Sandman against an advertisement.

No Australian transaction stands behind this value. A spec-adjusted figure built on it would look precise and would not be, so the report is refused instead of sold with a caveat. That goes for this car and 87 others. Everything above is free and stays free.
